Newmilns' Main Street (taking in Loudoun Road, Kilnholm Street, Main Street, Darvel Road) is part of the main A71 Strathaven route. (Irvine to Edinburgh road) The volume of traffic that passes up the Irvine Valley in one day must be staggering. Neither Newmilns or Darvel has been by passed so far (written 2011), and all traffic running East and West passes through the two towns.

Below are some images of the A71 road through Newmilns from older times. Isobel provided us with a set of postcards in a little booklet type thing. The supplier was Walker of Newmilns. An image of the back of one of the cards is given below. Some of the others are original cards, recently bought at a postcard fair!! There is also a nice set of old photos of the interior of The Covenantor's Inn. Remember the disco lights below floor level!!

Below are a set of four old photos of the interior of The Covenantor's Inn. These came from old David Simm that used to run the pub, formerly of Darvel, and then Girvan. They are photos of photos, but they turned out OK considering how they were taken. They were photographed off of a wall in David's house in Darvel many years ago with an old Zenith camera. Remember the disco lights below floor level!! The "ITS A SECRET" disco also used to be in the Darlington in Ayr, and also The Caledonian Hotel. (The Callais)
